- What Metformin tablet is and what it is used for?
This product contains metformin, a medicine to treat diabetes. It belongs to a group of medicines called biguanides. Metformin hydrochloride is used to treat patients with type 2 diabetes (also called ‘non-insulin dependent diabetes’) when diet and exercise alone have not been enough to control your blood glucose levels. It is used particularly in overweight patients.
- What you need to know before you take Metformin tablet :
- Do not take Metformin tablet if you:
- Are allergic to metformin hydrochloride or any of the other ingredients of this product.
- Suffer from severely reduced kidney function.
- Suffer from liver problems.
- Warnings and precautions:
Metformin may cause a very rare, but very serious side effect called lactic acidosis, particularly if your kidneys are not working properly. Symptoms of lactic acidosis include vomiting stomach ache, muscle cramps, a general feeling of not being well with severe tiredness, difficulty in breathing and reduced body temperature and heartbeat. Lactic acidosis is a medical emergency and must be treated in a hospital.
- Other medicines and Metformin tablet:
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription.
- How to take Metformin tablet:
Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure. Take the tablets with or after a meal. This will avoid you having side effects affecting your digestion.
- Possible side effects of Metformin tablet:
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
The side effects depend on the dose and the duration of treatment. The most common side effects are
Digestive problems, such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, backache, abdominal pain and loss of appetite.
- How to store Metformin tablet:
– Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
– Store in the original package in order to protect from light and moisture.
– Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the carton and blister after ‘EXP’.
– The expiry date refers to the last day of that month.
